Artist’s Assistant

job description:

Freelance contract, approx 2 days per week @ £120/day
+ benefits – budget for mobile phone contract, software etc.
Working hours: usually 10am-6:30pm (approx) with flexibility required

Background:

I am a socially-engaged visual artist who develops projects in collaboration with individuals and communities, exploring pressing social issues. I aim to make work of a high artistic quality, whilst also providing a caring environment that allows my collaborative partners to express themselves freely and try new things. An important part of my work is mentoring and supporting other emerging artists.

I have several exciting projects coming up over the next few months and require support with a wide variety of (mainly administrative) tasks. I need an assistant who can work closely with me to make sure these projects go smoothly, liaise with partners and colleagues, help make sure all funding and reporting requirements are up to date, as well as help to develop future projects and win funding and support.

In return I aim to offer:

  • A rewarding experience working on projects with the aim of using art for positive social change

  • A supportive environment where you are trusted to work in a self-directed way, or collaborate as a partner in the work, on different tasks

The sensitivity of some material (team member’s personal details, film material) and the nature of the work mean that the role is in-person, working from my studio at Chisenhale Studios. The role will also sometimes involve helping carry film equipment and occasional working in remote locations. For these reasons, a degree of physical mobility is required.

Skills and experience (necessary)

  • Managing budgets

  • Diary management

  • Writing funding applications

  • Managing social media accounts

  • Familiarity with Windows PCs, office software (inc. Excel), online tools such as project management software

  • Strong written and numerical skills

  • Basic professional film and photography equipment handling

  • Proven interest in using art for positive social change

Skills and experience (desirable)

  • Familiarity with technical equipment used for film production (cameras, sound, lights)

  • Experience with software used in visual arts production (Adobe CC, Resolve etc)

  • Familiarity with video and audio filetypes, knowledge of different formats and their use for production, archiving etc

  • Experience writing blog posts, newsletters, mailouts etc

I work in an industry that has chronically under-served individuals and communities on grounds of ethnicity, gender, class/socio-economic background, religion, marital status, (dis)ability and more. I am committed to playing an active role in rectifying these injustices. Applicants from any background under-served by the arts are positively encouraged to apply. If you have any questions or access requests relating to your application then please get in touch with me directly and I will do everything I can to assist. You can do this anonymously if you prefer.

To apply, please send:

  • Your CV

  • A statement of no more than 500 words, outlining your interest in the role and how you meet the necessary and (where relevant) desirable skills and experience

  • A 500 word sample of professional writing. This can be anything you feel is relevant – a paragraph from a funding application, a blog post, a long email – and should be something you’ve already written, not an extra burden

  • You must complete an equal opportunities monitoring form
