Micro commission celebrating women in physics, a collaboration with Liz Hingley and musician Dr. Annie Mahtani.
We wanted to create a piece of work that celebrated women working in physics, but which celebrated and made visible their work, rather than highlighting their gender. The finished installation references lectures, portraits, blackboard diagrams and is designed to make an often-complex and abstract concept feel human and accessible without an advanced physics qualification. Six short extracts are visible above.
We filmed with twelve physicists working at all levels, from undergrad to professor, and then animated a principle that's important in each person's area of research or study. Annie's soundtrack uses recordings from the University of Birmingham School of Physics and Astronomy and sonifications of solar frequencies as measured by Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON).
